Defence Planning Symposium NATO School Oberammergau (NSO)
From 24 to 26 Feb 2015, the NATO School Oberammergau hosted the Defence Planning Symposium (DPS) chaired by Mr Heinrich Brauss, Assistant Secretary General for Defence Policy and Planning, International Staff, NATO. The theme for the symposium was "Adapting NATO’s capabilities: Bolstering Readiness and Responsiveness".
The DPS has been conducted annually since the mid-seventies. Over 290 civilian and military personnel from 33 nations were in attendance, discussing defence planning and capability development within the context of the shifting security environment, NATO’s level of ambition and hybrid warfare.
This has been another productive symposium that provided an important input to the work we are about to carry out. I have no doubt that many of the ideas expressed here will resurface in the course of our work in the coming weeks and month. It is clear that we have some challenges to tackle but this Symposium has also highlighted the commitment to cooperation – not just of NATO nations but also of our partners and the EU. It has underlined the indivisibility of security, which is the key principle of our Alliance. And so – I am optimistic about the road ahead.
