Aim
This course examines a pressing contemporary security problem: human trafficking. It distinguishes between various types of human trafficking; provides an overview of the history of human trafficking and counter-strategies; discusses the causes and consequences of human trafficking; and critically assesses the achievements of counter-strategies devised and implemented by governments, international organizations, and private actors.

Learning Objectives
Types of Human Trafficking:
After completing this lesson you will be able to list and elaborate on the different types of human trafficking.
The History of Human Trafficking:
After completing this lesson, you will be able to sketch out important periods in the history of slavery and human trafficking, as well as milestones in efforts against slavery and trafficking; explain which strategies against exploitation have been successful or not, and why; and list differences and similarities between old and contemporary forms of human trafficking.
Causes of Human Trafficking:
After completing this lesson you will be able to name some of the push and pull factors of trafficking and elaborate on gender issues related to trafficking.
Consequences of Human Trafficking:
After completing this lesson you will be able to list and discuss the human, political, and economic consequences of human trafficking.
Strategies against Human Trafficking:
After completing this lesson you will be able to distinguish between different types of strategies against human trafficking; list and describe activities falling into the respective categories of legal measures, prosecution, protection, and prevention; and explain how different actors can contribute to counter-trafficking efforts.
Challenges to Counter-Trafficking Efforts:
After completing this lesson you will be able to list and elaborate on different anti-trafficking approaches, and discuss achievements and shortcomings of legislative measures, prosecution, protection, and prevention.

After completing this lesson, you will be able to list the main causes and consequences of human trafficking, and elaborate on counter-trafficking efforts and the challenges of counter-trafficking.

Methodology
While the focus of this ADL course is on the trafficking of persons for the purpose of sexual exploitation, it also discusses trafficking for the purpose of labor exploitation, as well as the illicit trade in human organs and the trade in children for the purpose of adoption.
