NATO Joint Intermediate Target Development Course

Aim

To provide NATO Targeteers the necessary knowledge and skill to develop and database any target type in the JTS database according to NATO standards, as informed by US CJCSI 3370.01, Target Development Standards, Allied Joint Publication (AJP) 3.9, ACO Directive (AD) 80-70, and ACO Manual (AM) 80-70.

Learning Objectives

Target Development: Given references, students will define target development in accordance with CJCSI 3370.01, AJP 3.9, and AD 80-70.

Developing NATO Target Types: Given references, students will describe specific target development characteristics associated with NATO Target Types in accordance with CJCSI 3370.01, AJP 3.9, and AD 80-70.

Target Development Research & Resources: Given examples, students will describe the available references and resources for target intelligence in NATO in accordance with CJCSI 3370.01, AJP 3.9, and AD 80-70.

IDB Search and Retrieval & Production: Given references and 5 notional targets, students will develop and enter targets into the database (JTS) according to the standards discussed in accordance with CJCSI 3370.01, AJP 3.9, and AD 80-70.

Develop and Database Targets: Given a scenario, students will prepare electronic target folders for 5 notional targets, in accordance with CJCSI 3370.01, AJP 3.9, and AD 80-70.

Course Participants

Individuals who are assigned, or selected for assignment, to a NATO, a Ministry of Defence, or subordinate military headquarters, unit or agency of any NATO country which fulfils targeting responsibilities in support of NATO. In particular, this course is aimed at targeting managers, targeting staff officers, and targeting analysts involved with target development.
Limited to personnel from: NATO and 7 NNN

Methodology

One week residency course comprised of interactive plenary lectures followed by practical exercises in conducting ITD. Course culminates in a 2-part summative exam.

Further Information

This course is offered both as a resident course and/or a Mobile Education Training Team (METT).
This one week course is open to ranks OR5 - OF5 from NATO nations, Australia, Austria, Switzerland, Finland, Ireland, New Zealand, and Sweden. Students must possess valid a NS clearance in order to attend.
The course is comprised of a doctrinal portion and hands-on application portion; both require an 80% pass mark for for successful course completion.
