This course discusses the history of chemical and biological warfare; the characteristics and effects of various nuclear and radiological weapons and biological agents; the general WMD threat; and nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) risks to NATO.

Learning Objectives
History of Chemical and Biological Warfare:
After completing this lesson, you will be familiar with: - the chronological history of chemical and biological weapon use and nuclear warfare - various countermeasures to offset the use of chemical weapons and nuclear warfare.
Characteristics and Effects of Nuclear Weapons:
After completing this lesson, you will be able to: -identify the characteristics of nuclear weapons.
- distinguish between nuclear and conventional explosions: their properties, how they are used, and how they are produced.
- distinguish between nuclear fission and fusion.
- identify types of bursts.
Characteristics and Effects of Biological Agents:
After completing this lesson, you will be able to identify the characteristics and actions of major biological threat agents.
Characteristics and Effects of Chemical Agents:
After completing this lesson, you will:
- know the characteristics of chemical agents.
- be able to distinguish between persistent and non-persistent agents.
Toxic Industrial Materials (TIMs):
After completing this lesson, you will:
- know the impact of TIM's
- know the impact of TIC's
- appreciate the basis for increased public health preparedness
NBC Risks to NATO:
After completing this lesson, you will understand the NBC risks to NATO.
NATO NBC Defence Doctrine:
After completing this lesson, you will know the principles of NBC defence.
The Prague Summit and the NBC Defence Initiatives:
After completing this lesson, you will be familiar with the history of NATO's NBC defence policy.
