Aim
The main purpose of this course is to provide awareness, basic knowledge and familiarization on NATO CIMIC/CMI like current doctrine, definitions, procedures and developments for personnel involved in CIMIC/CMI activities, across the full spectrum of military engagement in a modern conflict situation or in a humanitarian relief operation, up to and including Joint Force Command Level. The second purpose is to create awareness for those organizations and individuals who have a vested interest in CIMIC/CMI activities.

Learning Objectives
General information:
After completing this chapter the student: Knows the definition of NATO CIMIC and its application. Will be able to describe the aim and purpose of NATO CIMIC. Is able to recall the core functions of NATO CIMIC. Knows the basic NATO CIMIC documents.
Civil-military liaison:
After completing this chapter the student: Understands the purpose of CIMIC liaison. Knows the principles of CIMIC liaison. Is able to describe the basic activities and tasks of a CIMIC liaison officer. Knows the definition, purpose and key functions of a CIMIC Centre.
Support to the force:
After completing this chapter the student: Knows how to advice the commander on CIMIC matters. Knows the relation between the CIMIC branch and other staff functions.
Support to civil actors and their environment:
After completing this chapter the student: Knows the difference between IO, IGO, NGO. Knows the variety of local actors. Knows the decision making process of how to support civil actors.

Methodology
This six hour course conmprises of 4 modules. A fifth module offers furhter information on additional qualifications in CIMIC. The course is mandatory for all NATO School students who are attending the resident CIMIC courses at NATO School.
