The aim of this course is to provide students with foundational knowledge of the capabilities, limitations and vulnerabilities of Space assets including the utilization of Space Services and Products by Nations and NATO in crisis and operational activities.

Learning Objectives

SPACE SUPPORT EVOLUTION TO NATO OPERATIONS: Given references, students will explain the evolution of NATO’s Approach to Space including the international legal and national policy implications regarding the application and uses of the Space domain.

Space fundamentals: Given references, students will explain the fundamental aspects of the space environment, orbital mechanics, satellite design and features, space launched and space system command and control operations in accordance with Allied Joint Publication 3.3(A).

SPACE FUNCTIONAL AREAS: Given references, students will identify the capabilities, limitations and vulnerabilities of the Space domain and how they are used in NATO operations.

MILITARY, CIVIL AND COMMERCIAL PARTNERS: Given references, students will identify military, civil, government and industry developments within the Space-based environment.

Course Participants

Military officers (OF-1 through OF-5) and NCOs (OR-5 through OR-9) or their civilian equivalents who are assigned to NATO or national positions that involve space support or planning in multinational joint operations.

Methodology

This one week course is composed of lectures and student presentations of National Capabilities. After creating a baseline understanding of the Space environment, the course will present the Space mission areas from both a technical and operational approach.
Students will apply their knowledge through a formative group guided test and discussion forum at the end of the course.
Instructor will provide students with the learning objectives at the beginning of thye course for data collection and feedback purposes.
