To provide foundational knowledge on NATO structure, policies and operations and current issues affecting the Alliance.

Learning Objectives
NATO History:
Given references students will be able to describe the cornerstones in NATO History and Strategies and to recall NATO’s political and military organisation as well as current operations conducted by NATO
NATO Operational Art:
Students will be able to recall the NATO Operational Planning Process in the Comprehensive Operational Planning Directive and to describe the aim of NATO’s Response Force Concept
NATO Legal Aspects:
Given references, students will describe the legal parameters, requirements and responsibilities with regard to peace support operations and NATO’s ROE, with a special focus on required authority, the use of force and self-defence.
NATO Civil Military Relations:
Referencing NATO’s military policy on CIMIC the students will describe the meaning of CIMIC, CIMIC activities and capabilities and how important civil military cooperation is on the contemporary battlefield
NATO Partnerships and Agreements:
Students will be able to describe the importance of NATO’s partnerships and initiatives to include Partnership for Peace [PfP], Mediterranean Dialogue [MD], Istanbul Cooperation Initiative [ICI]) and other international relationships.
Cultural Diversity within the Alliance:
Students will outline the importance of cultural diversity of different countries / regions to be considered in an international environment.
NATO's Current Operating Environment:
Referencing NATO’s current situation and the decision of the recent summits the students will be able to recognize risks and threats of the future as seen by NATO
Course Participants
Military personnel (OR-4 through OF-5) or civilian equivalent working within the NCS/NFS or national institutions.

Methodology
The following on-line learning modules are recommended prior to arrival:
1. ADL - 037 Introduction to NATO.
2. ADL - 169 Improving Operational Effectiveness by Integrating Gender Perspective.
The one-week resident course uses the following methods of instruction:
(1) Formal lectures followed by Q&A periods.
(2) Panel discussions in support of a preceding formal lecture.
(3) Syndicate work (e.g. guided discussion, problem solving) to consolidate knowledge gained.
In order to reach a wide range of students in an online environment, the "DL" version of the M5-32 NATO Orientation Course is delivered over two weeks via the NSO eLearning Platform and the NSO’s web-based VTC system. The course has three modules and combines pre-recorded lectures with online group activity.
