Aim
The aim of this course is to prepare NATO Intelligence
Professionals to apply the methodology of indicatorbased
warning intelligence analysis and to employ the
NATO Intelligence Warning System software.

Learning Objectives
Explain Indications and Warning Tradecraft:
Given references, the student will explain the basic principles, functions, and failures of indications and warning tradecraft.
Explain Indicator-Based Warning Intelligence Methodology:
Given references, the student will explain the methodology used within indicator-based warning intelligence.
Operate NIWS Software:
Given references, the student will employ the NIWS and NIWS training websites’ capabilities for searching, tracking warning problem status, and uploading of warning reports.
Apply conventional indications and warning methodology:
Given references and a warning problem end state, the student will apply the conventional indications and warning methodology to create indications and warning products up to, but not including the Warning Report.
Produce a NIWS Warning Report:
Given references, and using all information from previous group practical exercises and LO 1-4 and 6, the student will produce a written, conventional NIWS Warning Report meeting NATO MC 0166 standards, first as a group, then as an individual.
Apply Transnational Indications and Warning Methodology:
Given references and a warning problem end state, the student will apply the transnational indications and warning methodology to create indications and warning products up to, but not including the Warning Report.
Course Participants
Military officers (OF-2 through OF-5) and NCOs (OR-6 through OR-9), or civilian equivalent, who are assigned, or selected for assignment, to a NATO or PfP Organization (limited to Australia, Austria, Finland, Ireland, New Zealand, Sweden and Switzerland), a Ministry of Defence, or subordinate military headquarters, unit, or agency of any NATO or PfP country listed above, which fulfills responsibilities in support of NATO Indications and Warnings or Crisis Management.

Methodology
This one-week course is comprised of interactive plenary lectures introducing the NIWS, MC 0166 Policy, the NIWS website and software, and the NATO approved Inidcations and Warning methodology, followed by instructor-facilitated practical exercises designed to test student comprehension of course materials, and culminating in a summative written product (a complete conventional NIWS report).
