Learning Objectives
Common Research Process:
Given technical/methodological references and a set of parameters, demonstrate student ability to analyse problems and understand Request for Information (RFI) & Intelligence requirements (IR). Quality: 85% accuracy over 95% of the time.
Sources:
Given references, demonstrate awareness of the variety of parameters related to the content and nature of Sources, to avoid, among others, problems like denial, deception and/or propaganda.
Content Analysis:
Given references, utilize a critical thinking methodology to describe a structured approach on how to read OSINT contents.
Collection Planning:
Given references, utilize a critical thinking methodology to describe a structured approach for a “step-by-step” collection activity.
OSINT as a Supporting Tool:
Given references, raise students’ awareness on how OSINT can support and test the hypothesis, as well as identify the indicators.
Research on a Case:
Given technical/methodological references, utilize a critical thinking methodology to better understand and describe concepts like Problem Decomposition, Research & Collection Plan, Time Management, Collection and Packaging. To combine these concept in a consolidating exercise.
Internet and Internet Services:
Given technical/methodological references, utilize a critical thinking methodology to raise basic understanding of what Internet is and how it can work. More specifically, to explain the basic structure of the Internet and the World-Wide Web, to describe how information flows across the Internet and navigate the internet by conducting research through different types of search engines.
Reducing Visibility:
Given references, utilize a critical thinking methodology to raise students’ awareness about Visibility in the Internet and make some practical suggestions on how to reduce it.
News and News Services:
Given references, utilize a critical thinking methodology to raise students’ awareness on what kind of tools/services can be used to achieve situation awareness.
Social Media:
Given references, to provide some practical suggestions and tools and utilize a critical thinking methodology to raise students’ awareness on how the major Social Media services can be used for Intel exploitation.
Case Study and Practical Exercise:
Given references, to give a final assignment based on a real case study and to develop Practical Exercise.
Course Participants
Officers and NCOs (or civilian equivalent) responsible for conducting OSINT collection and analysis in support of NATO military operations and planning.

Methodology
One-week course comprising:
a. Lectures,
b. Case studies, and
c. Student exercises.
Lectures will include exposure to current and emerging tools and techniques to protect friendly information, conduct advanced searches on the internet, and evaluate OSINT sources. Exercises will be independent of each other and will reinforce student learning of OSINT collection tools and techniques.
