Aim
This course provides Alliance members with education and individual training on environmental laws, policies, standards, regulations, and practices at the operational level in order to assess, control, and mitigate environmental impacts while enabling staff planners to integrate environmental considerations into operational planning.

Learning Objectives
Environmental Protection Concepts:
Given references, the student will explain the environmental impacts of military operations, NATO environmental protection doctrine, and the commander’s responsibilities under international environmental laws in accordance with NATO STANAGs and policies.
Training Planning:
Given references, the student will develop a multinational pre-deployment training plan using environmental protection requirements in accordance with NATO STANAGs and policies.
Operational Planning:
Given references, the student will develop an operational plan using environmental considerations to identify risks and mitigate impacts in accordance with NATO STANAGs and policies.
Environmental Management System (EMS):
Given references, the student will explain the Environmental Management System and factors to consider including the role of contracting during an operation in accordance with NATO STANAGs and policies.
Case Studies:
Given references, the student will describe lessons learned from environmental issues of specified operations, how it affects security to forces and the contribution from international organizations in accordance with NATO STANAGs and policies.
Media Interaction:
Given references, the student will apply a communications plan to the public media on the environmental protection aspects of an operation in accordance with NATO STANAGs and policies.
ENERGY AND SUSTAINABILITY IN OPERATIONS:
Given references, describe the relationship between environmental protection and energy as they relate to sustainability in operations in accordance with NATO STANAGs and policies.
Course Participants
Military officer (OF-1 thru OF-5), NCO (OR-7 thru OR-9), and/or civilian equivalent who is assigned, or selected for assignment, to a NATO or PfP Headquarters or Agency, assigned to, or earmarked for assignment, to NATO/PfP, or a Ministry of Defense, Foreign Affairs Department or subordinate military headquarters, unit or agency of any NATO or PfP country which fulfils responsibilities in support of Environmental Protection (EP).

Methodology
This two week course (10 days) is comprised of formal lectures, followed by brief moderated questions and answer sessions. Four syndicate exercises on various scenarios incorporate all of the course’s learning objectives.
