Methodology

This one-week course is comprised of lectures and syndicate work. Day 1 is primarily focused on creating a baseline understanding of NATO medical support planning, including a historical context and how NATO strategy, doctrine, and systems fit into the NATO command structure and operational planning process. Day 2 focuses on medical support planning in the maritime environment. Day 3 enlarges the focus to special considerations. Day 4 emphasis is on the practical application of medical support planning information learned from the lessons in scenario-based syndicate work. Day 5 focuses on applying the knowledge gained into a maritime medical support plan briefing to the NAVAL task force commander and the medical advisor

Further Information

Recent maritime operations, including Operation Ocean Shield [OOS] and Operation Unified Protector [OUP] have shown a weakness in the application of maritime medical support doctrine. This knowledge was, until 2008, imparted by an annual Joint Maritime Logistics and Medical Course (JMLMC) at NATO SCHOOL Oberammergau. This was discontinued with no other means of achieving its aims being established. There is a need to ensure a common understanding of NATO Maritime Medical Support processes and practices to ensure the most efficient use of scarce medical resources.
